Information as to your assigned time will be emailed to you upon the Clerk's Office's receipt of your clearance from the State Board of Law Examiners. Due to the number of candidates for admission, there will be NO CHANGES made to the class assignments.
If you are unable to attend the ceremony for which you are scheduled, your admission will be delayed until further notice. Please notify the Clerk's Office immediately upon receipt of the email with your assigned time by responding to that email at MDBarAdmissions@mdcourts.gov.
Accessibility Accommodations: If you or one of your guests has a special need that requires any reasonable accommodation, please respond as soon as possible to the email you will receive upon clearance (MDBarAdmissions@mdcourts.gov) or by calling (410) 260-1500.
Security Screening: Plan to arrive early to the Courts of Appeal building as both you and your guests will be subject to a security screening before being allowed entry into the building. The only bags allowed will be clear plastic, vinyl, or PVC tote bags no larger than 12" x 6" x 12" and/or small clutch bags (4.5" x 6.5"). Small clutch bags do NOT have to be clear. No other bags of any type will be allowed, including backpacks and briefcases. Anyone who violates this policy will be asked to return prohibited bags to their vehicles.
Checking In For Your Ceremony: After your security screening, please proceed to the Lawyer's Waiting Room on the 4th Floor to check in at the appropriate time for your scheduled ceremony.
- If you are scheduled at 9:00 a.m., check in will open at 8:15 a.m. Please check in no later than 8:45 a.m.
- If you are scheduled at 10:30 a.m., check in will open at 9:45 a.m. Please check in no later than 10:15 a.m.
- If you are scheduled at 12:00 p.m., check in will open at 11:15 a.m. Please check in no later than 11:15 a.m.
If you have not checked in by 15 minutes before the ceremony start time, you will not be permitted to participate in the ceremony -- NO EXCEPTIONS!!
Attire: Wear appropriate business attire. Please remember that this is your first appearance before the Court of Appeals.
Fee for Your Bar Certificate: If you are picking up your bar certificate in person at our office, please send a check or money order (made out to "Clerk, Court of Appeals) or cash (exact change only) in the amount of $20. If the bar certificate will be mailed to you, please send a check or a money order (made out to "Clerk, Court of Appeals") in the amount of $25.
Tickets for Two Guests: Each candidate will be issued two (2) e-tickets via Eventbrite. Please be on the lookout for the Eventbrite email (be sure to check Spam/Junk folders), which will be sent to the email address that is on file with the SBLE shortly after we receive notification of your clearance. Please provide the electronic barcode to your two (2) guests so that they can present the barcode using a smartphone (or printed ticket if necessary) to the door attendant. If you do not have an Eventbrite account, you can easily access your tickets by clicking on the PDF attachment in the email that you receive - this will open a PDF with both tickets/barcodes that you can transfer to your guests.
Infants and Very Small Children: As a courtesy to all admittees and their guests, the Court requests that infants and very small children not be taken into courtroom during the admission ceremony.
Live Webcast of the Ceremony The ceremony will also be live-streamed and additional family and friends can watch at the Court of Appeals' webcast page or at the Bar Admissions webcast page. Recordings of the ceremonies will be archived at the Bar Admissions webcast page for eight to ten weeks after the ceremony.
Directions and Parking: The Robert C. Murphy Courts of Appeal Building is located at 361 Rowe Boulevard, in Annapolis, Maryland. Directions are attached to the email you will receive upon clearance. [See area map]
Parking is available at the Naval Academy stadium lot, Gate 5, for a $5.00 fee (cash/Mastercard/Visa are accepted). The lot is a 5-minute walk from the Courts of Appeal building.
AFTER THE CEREMONY:
You are not entitled to practice law within the State of Maryland until you have been admitted by the Court of Appeals AND have registered with the Attorney Information System.
Within approximately 24 hours of the administration of the Oath, you will receive an email notifying you of your obligation to register with the Attorney Information System ("AIS"). Important information about AIS and your annual compliance obligations can be found at the AIS page here.
