Effective June 8, 2020, all persons entering the Allegany County Circuit Courthouse and Annex shall wear a face mask, scarf, or other device covering their nose and mouth. No person may ride on an elevator containing other persons unless all persons are wearing a face mask, scarf, or other device. All persons admitted to the building shall respond to verbal COVID-19 screening questions and consent to a non-contact temperature check conducted by staff of the Sheriff’s Office and shall be barred from entry if he/she declines consent or registers a temperature of 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit or more. The Allegany County Sheriff’s Office is authorized to deny admission or remove any person from the Courthouse or Annex who is not in compliance with any of these terms. Welcome to the Circuit Court for Allegany County located in Cumberland, Maryland. It is part of the Fourth Judicial Circuit, which also includes Garrett and Washington Counties. The circuit court is a general jurisdiction trial court hearing domestic, civil, criminal, juvenile, and all jury trial cases. The circuit court also has appellate jurisdiction over the district court and certain administrative agencies.
The Circuit Court for Allegany County consists of two judges, a family law magistrate, and a child support magistrate. The administration office of the court consists of a court administrator, law clerks, legal assistants/court recorders, jury commissioner, family services coordinator, and bailiffs. The judges, magistrates, and court staff work closely and in conjunction with the Office of the Clerk of Court.
The courthouse is situated on historic Washington Street near the site of where Fort Cumberland (c. 1754) originally stood. The circuit court has had a long tradition of serving the people of Allegany County and we are proud to continue to serve the public with respect, dignity, and in accordance with the law.
