Maryland Judiciary Data Dashboard: Data Notes and Data Exports

The Maryland Judiciary Data Dashboard is refreshed annually. While much of the data on the dashboard is included in the Maryland Judiciary Annual Statistical Abstract, there will be discrepancies due to the static nature of the abstract and differences in case categorization.

The Maryland Judiciary Data Dashboard is designed to be clear and intuitive. If you need assistance with using or navigating the data dashboard, please refer to the MDJ Data Dashboard – Tips and Tricks document for guidance. If you need further assistance or would like to make a suggestion for improvement, contact [email protected] and use “MDJ Data Dashboard” in the subject line.

District Court

Motor Vehicle
The motor vehicle case category includes DUI, serious, and non-serious traffic cases by incident (including cases prepaid before trial). Motor vehicle filings and dispositions are classified as incidents, not cases, as there can be multiple motor vehicle tickets per incident. While motor vehicle incidents are compared against total case filings and dispositions in other categories, it is not a direct comparison.
Parking/red light incidents include requests for trial only and are counted as both filings and dispositions in the fiscal year in which they were filed.
The ‘Other’ case type includes Natural Resources and Maryland Transit Authority citations.

Civil
The total number of civil dispositions includes total judgments only. Other types of dispositions for civil cases (dismissals, jury trial prayers) are not included in this dashboard.

Criminal
Fugitive warrants are included in filings data only.

Landlord Tenant
The landlord tenant case category is not inclusive of all historical cases, as it primarily includes the electronically captured cases. A reduced number of cases will be displayed in fiscal years prior to the adopting of an electronic case management system, varying by county.
Total dispositions and disposition types are not available for landlord tenant cases, due to the phased adoption of Maryland Electronic Courts (MDEC). This data are expected to be available in FY25 and beyond.

Peace Order & Domestic Violence
Peace order and domestic violence data are refreshed annually, at the conclusion of each fiscal year.

Miscellaneous
The miscellaneous case category includes Forfeitures of Contraband and Injunctions in filings data only. These case types are not included in disposition data.

Percent of Cases Terminated Within Time Standards

The ‘Percent of Cases Terminated Within Time Standards’ statistic is calculated using sampling in a different software and is provided for the dashboard as calculated percentages for case category types. For example, for District Court data, percent of cases terminated within time standards for the Motor Vehicle case category is comprised of time standards for DUI/DWI, Payable and Must Appear separately. Therefore, time standard for the combined case type of Payable & Must Appear is an unweighted average of the two latter and may differ from the exact subcategory percentages included in the relevant Statewide Caseflow Assessment Reports found here.

The weighted statewide averages of Percent of Cases Terminated Within Time Standards, included in the above report, is not calculated or included on this dashboard. The Percent of Cases Terminated Within Time Standards that is calculated for all counties is unweighted, and will not match the weighted average of the sample, included in the above report.

Case Types Included in Percent of Cases Terminated Within Time Standards (District Court)

Civil Large Claims and Civil Small Claims are mapped to a case category of Civil. Traffic 21-902 is mapped to a case type of DUI/DWI, which is mapped to a case category of Motor Vehicle. Traffic Must Appear and Traffic Payable are mapped to a case type of Payable & Must Appear, which is mapped to a case category of Motor Vehicle.

Case Types Included in Percent of Cases Terminated Within Time Standards (Circuit Court)

Civil General (Non-Foreclosure) and Foreclosure are mapped to a case category of Civil. Family General is mapped to a case category of Family. Delinquency, Child in Need of Assistance (Shelter and Non-Shelter) and Termination of Parental Rights are mapped to a case category of Juvenile.
