Audubon Collection: Barn Owl

Barn Owl

Plate 110
Havell CLXXI

Barn Owl

(Tyto alba)

This pair of owls was given to Audubon, as he wrote in his text, “by my friend Richard Harlan, M.D., of Philadelphia. They had been brought from the south, and were fine adult birds in excellent plumage.” In Havell’s engraving of this plate a night scene was added as background. The drawing is inscribed at lower left “New Jersey July 1832.”
