“Courting Art Baltimore” Returns for Second Year to Strengthen
Relationship between Courts and Community

2017 Program Includes Larger Scholarship Awards

(BALTIMORE – April 13, 2017) – Courting Art Baltimore will celebrate its second annual art contest for local high school students at a reception on Thursday, April 20, 6:30 p.m., in the Eastside District Court Building.  This year, the program will award scholarships toward art programs or post-high school degrees to the top five student entries, including a first-place scholarship of $5,000.

Courting Art Baltimore contest

Courting Art Baltimore promotes the city’s youth and their artwork, connects the legal community with local Baltimore communities, and strives to reduce stress and anxiety for litigants and visitors by beautifying local courthouses.  During the reception, students gather with families and friends to see their artwork unveiled on the courthouse walls, and the top prize winners will be announced.  Media are invited to attend.

Baltimore high school students were invited to submit paintings, drawings, or other two-dimensional works of art based on the theme, “We are Baltimore.”  In addition to the five scholarship prizes, other prizes include gift certificates for art supplies.  The artwork has been professionally reproduced for long-term display at the Baltimore City Eastside District Courthouse.

Courting Art Baltimore is led by the District Court of Maryland, Baltimore City, the Baltimore Bar Foundation, Inc., and the Bar Association of Baltimore City in partnership with Baltimore City Community College and Baltimore City Public Schools.  The program is modeled on an award-winning program created by the Montgomery Bar Association in Pennsylvania that focuses on artwork by local senior citizens.
