Maryland Judges Gather for Statewide Meeting

(ANNAPOLIS, Md. – May 12, 2011) On Friday, May 13, judges from throughout Maryland will assemble for the statewide meeting of the Maryland Judicial Conference. The topics to be addressed during the conference include understanding and managing conflicts in courtrooms, new and pending legislation, and addiction and criminal behavior.

“The Judicial Conference is usually held over three days with more topics and a more in-depth examination of issues, but for the second time, the economy has forced us to downscale this vital educational event,” said Chief Judge Robert M. Bell of the Maryland Court of Appeals. “Because we believe the ongoing education of judges to be so important to the courts’ mission, as we did last year, we have elected to hold a one-day session at our own facility, which just happens to be able to accommodate all of us.”

Also during the Conference, the Maryland Access to Justice Commission will present its first annual Access to Justice Awards to the Public Justice Center’s Tenants in Foreclosure project; Del. Kathleen Dumais, Maryland House of Delegates; Sen. Brian Frosh, Maryland Senate; Gov. Martin O’Malley; Chief Judge Ben C. Clyburn of the District Court of Maryland; and Joan Bellistri, director of the Anne Arundel County Public Law Library in the Circuit Court for Anne Arundel County.
